Work Safety Glasses

The eyes are one of the most important organs of the human body. Figuratively speaking, they are the windows through which we see the world around us. But their vital role goes hand in hand with their delicate nature - even small particles of dust, metal, wood, corrosive liquids and tiny insects can cause temporary or even permanent damage. These adverse reactions include corneal erosion (which is the outermost layer of the eye that wears out), scratched lenses, and in some cases, eye punctures that can lead to blindness.

While it is true that there is no place where such hazards do not occur, these events are more likely to occur in high-risk work environments. Personnel working in such high-risk, eye-hazardous environments must wear work safety glasses to protect their eyes from flying debris.

Safety glasses are made of clear glass so protection does not come at the cost of reduced visibility. The lenses are non-corrective, which means they are not designed to improve the vision of people who already suffer from any visual impairment, such as farsightedness and nearsightedness. Work safety glasses are used primarily by workers in the construction industry, by laboratory professionals who must handle chemicals in the course of their work, and by industries that use metal and wood in manufacturing or fabrication.

Such work environments are occasionally subject to flying debris, chemical powders and liquids. For example, in masonry, small metal particles are thrown into the air when metal is struck, sawed or cut. Lab workers will often handle highly alkaline or acidic chemicals that can damage eyes if spills or chemical tests are more explosive than initially expected.

However, despite the name, work safety glasses are not only used in a work environment. These safety glasses can also be used by swimmers, although safety glasses for water must be waterproof when worn. Swimming pools with chlorine-treated water (a common form of treatment in public pools) can cause painful eye irritation, a condition known as chlorine sting. However, many swimmers are reluctant to wear work safety glasses underwater because the goggles impede peripheral vision.

In addition to preventing objects and liquids from entering the eyes, work safety glasses can be useful in situations where strong gusts of wind may cause dry eyes. A good example is when one is riding a motorcycle - the rider will experience strong wind resistance. Wearing a standard helmet without front glass is not enough, as they are only meant to protect the head in case of a fall. Dry eyes can eventually lead to impaired or blurred vision.

Studies have shown that eye injuries in the work environment can be reduced by about 90 percent simply by wearing safety glasses. When it comes to eye care, prevention is far better than cure.
