In addition, OSHA requires employers to implement a hearing conservation program if employee noise exposures equal or exceed an 8-hour time-weighted average of 85 decibels (dB). The program must include monitoring of employee noise exposures, provision of hearing protection, employee training, and annual audiometric testing.
When selecting PPE for hearing protection, employers must ensure that the equipment reduces employee exposure to hazardous noise levels to below 85 dB. PPE must be properly fitted, and employees must be trained on how to use and care for the equipment.
