Please note that welding is a high-risk operation and it is your employer's responsibility to provide good ventilation, shielding and other protective devices. When proper measures are taken to protect welders from potential hazards, arc welding can be a safe occupation. However, if safety aspects are ignored, welders can be exposed to many risks, such as electrocution, overexposure to fumes and gases, arc radiation, and fire outbreaks and explosions.
When a welder performs a task, the welding rod and area is electrically "hot" ...... Do not touch these hot parts with bare hands or wet clothing. Wear dry, non-porous gloves to insulate hands.
Always keep the electrode holder, work clamp, welding cable and welder in perfect working condition. Do not submerge the welding rod in water for cooling, as most welding operators prefer.
Be aware that arc rays will burn. Always use a shield with proper filters and covers to protect your eyes from sparks and arc rays when welding or even when observing open arc welding. Use proper protective clothing made of flame retardant material to protect your skin and that of your assistants from arc rays.
It is well known that gas cylinders can explode if they are damaged. Use only compressed gas cylinders containing the correct protective gas required for the process and the correct regulator designed for the gas and pressure used. All hoses, fittings, etc. should be suitable for the application and in good condition.
If working on electric equipment, you must ensure that the input power is turned off using the disconnect switch on the fuse box before starting work on the equipment. Likewise, for engine driven equipment. You must turn off the engine before troubleshooting and performing maintenance work, unless maintenance work requires it to be running.
It goes without saying that welding can produce harmful fumes and gases, which can be a significant health risk. Take care to avoid breathing these unpleasant fumes and gases. Provide adequate ventilation and/or exhaust at the arc to keep fumes and gases away from the breathing zone. Keep all equipment safety guards, covers, and equipment in place and in proper repair.
Welding operators should be aware of and use all personal protective accessories such as face shields, helmets, and goggles with special filter lenses or plates. Screens or shields should also be installed to protect personnel near the welding area from heat/light. Hearing A personal respirator will help with ventilation problems and should be used in addition to general ventilation.
Inspect the entire area prior to beginning welding operations. Remove gas cans and all other flammable items that may catch fire. In addition, keep buckets, hoses and other pressurized firefighting equipment. In the event of a fire, someone should be nearby to act quickly.
Be sure to read and understand the manufacturer's instructions for the welding equipment and consumables to be used. Read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) carefully and follow your employer's safety practices. MSDS forms can be obtained from your welding distributor or manufacturer.
