History
The first welding cap was designed to protect the eyes and head from the ultraviolet light produced by arc welders. It was very heavy and had two black peepholes that allowed the wearer to see out.
The original masks were lined with asbestos to prevent burns, but unfortunately for users of these masks, it was determined a few years later that asbestos inhalation was very dangerous. Many users of these early masks eventually developed lung cancer, which over time was directly linked to the use of the original type of mask. There was usually a leather hood worn under the mask, draped over the shoulders and covering the neck to add extra protection. It is difficult to find new masks that still have leather hoods.
As time has passed, the mask has evolved into a lighter structure. The lens is now usually a solid piece that is clear but treated to protect the eyes, darkens like some sunglasses when it detects changes in light from welding, and dims to make adjustments. Many welders still complain that welding masks are bulky and block their vision, but working without them, especially when arc welding is very dangerous and can cause serious eye damage.
The welder's eyes are very painful; they become extremely swollen, red and painful. Sometimes even with the benefit of a welding mask the welder's eye occurs. Immediate medical attention is required to treat this condition.
Cost
A welder's mask can be very expensive, but it is a very necessary piece of equipment. Without the safety of a welder's mask, welding cannot be done.
A cheap welding mask can be purchased for less than $20, which may not be the best choice because it may not provide the protection needed.
Better models sell for between $200 and $500; auto-darkening models cost the most.
