There are many types of welding hats and many prices!
First: pick up that handheld helmet ASAP!
Second: get at least $20 for the basic black flip-up lens type.
Third: You can get a large lens flip-up regular helmet for about $35. (Hobart #770003, via Amazon.com).
Fourth: If you have $60, you can buy a basic auto-turning black helmet from weldinghelmetstore.com or anywhere else.
Fifth: If you can afford it, shop around at your local welding store to see if there's one you can buy. If not go to Craigslist or similar. (Example: $65 late model "auto" in Long Beach, CA.

*Lens type: auto-darkening or normal lens.
Auto-darkening.
1) No need to flip the observation cover or the whole helmet.
2) If you work in a tight place, you have more working space.
3) You can set up the workpiece and the rod (or wire gun) more easily without flipping the hood up and down.
4) Easier on your neck, without all the flipping.
5) You can see your workpiece setting, but once you hit the arc, there is still protection.
6) They are powered by batteries and/or solar power.
Conventional shots.
1) They are cheaper and still available for those just starting out.
2) When you are ready to do a lot of welding, you may want to change to auto-darkening.
3) Easier to get burned by the flash, allowing your workpiece to move as you flip.
4) Most viewing areas are much smaller.
Variable or fixed shading: 1) Fixed shading.
If you will be welding at a similar amperage and weld type, then the fixed shade of #10 will work for most of us.
2) Variable Shade: If you are going to be doing very high AMP welds (above 200 AMPS) then you will want the shade to change to #12 or more depending on what you are doing.
3) Switching times: (light to dark, etc.) to help protect your eyes).
* They range from about 1/3600 second to 1/16000 second. The faster they are, the higher the cost. Slower speeds may cause eye strain.

* Batteries: Lithium batteries for longer lasting / or alkaline batteries for cheaper alternatives.

*ANZI Z87 - 2003 or higher is safer. Older people may make your eyes more tired because of how quickly/slowly they change shadows/darkness.
