Workplace safety is critical, and as workplace trends evolve with the changing times. While there are specific lists of guidelines for each industry, some are shared.
In order to implement and follow safety guidelines, the right tools must be used. Even in industries as diverse as construction and warehousing, certain gear must be worn and each must meet national or international standards. Let's see what they are.
Eye and face protection
Eye protection consists of goggles and a face shield with a sturdy visor. They protect against glare, sparks, debris and chemical sprays. Since goggles are worn in environments where there is some risk, they must be made of lenses that can withstand heat, glare and the other distractions mentioned above.
Meanwhile, facial protection also includes protective eyewear, but in a larger shield-like form. It may be attached to a helmet or attached separately, but it covers the entire face so that even high-risk jobs such as welding do not pose a threat.
Unlike prescription glasses made of glass, goggles and face shields are based on polycarbonate. A special coating ensures that they will not burn or break in stressful work environments. The gear also filters out harmful radiation, as these environments sometimes produce UV and IR radiation.
Hand protection
Hand gear includes heavy-duty gloves that protect against abrasions, chemical and biological agents, and fire. As with eye and face protection, they must meet strict quality standards. Glove size is another important consideration, as a poor fit can result in poor grip.
Gloves must be selected based on the nature of the work. If workers must handle chemicals and liquids, they must wear gloves with resistance. Polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene are the top materials. If they work under heat and fire, then the equipment should protect them from both.
Headgear
Headwear includes helmets and helmets that can resist heavy impacts. Just as motorcycle helmets are designed with precise specifications and even shapes in the same way, workplace head protection uses the same precise construction.
Helmets can be traditional (to reduce impact to the head, neck and spine), suitable for general applications, or electrically resistant (up to 20,000 volts or more). Some are universal, as other components such as face shields and goggles can be added. It all depends on the environment and the nature of the work.
Protective clothing
Most protective clothing includes coveralls, garments for heat and fire protection, chemicals, biological agents (for example, designed for people working with hazardous materials), extreme cold and extreme heat. People working in forestry, such as loggers, will need to wear clothing specific to their occupation; for example, pants will be made of chain-saw resistant fabric that is also waterproof and oil resistant.
High safety
We included high-safety gear because falls from heights are blamed for one of the most common causes of death in some workplaces. Each year, the construction industry sees a high number of fatalities due to falls. This is a cause for concern because most workers are working at heights that cannot be stopped.
There is more safety equipment that can be worn in the workplace, all of which provides valuable protection against injury and death. These are just a few examples of the equipment worn by all heavy industry workers.
