Tips for Working Safely at Heights

Safety is often a subjective term, especially in the case of people who are required to work at heights for long periods of time. In the construction industry, most workers spend an average of six hours a week working at heights that are considered dangerous, which means making sure people don't die. Many steps can be taken to ensure that a person does not trip and die. Here we take a look at the most common measures that need to be taken regardless of the industry.

Two-person teams

All work at height should be done as a team. Ideally, two people should be involved in any work performed at heights of 30 feet or more. Two-person teams ensure that each person is looking for the other, thus preventing many of the common mistakes associated with falls. When working as a team, one person needs to be a few feet lower than the other, and each person should also take turns doing the required work every 30 minutes. For example, if the 30th floor of a building is being painted, one person should stand below the person painting and the work should rotate after 30 minutes. This reduces the number of errors that can occur.

Safety belts and helmets

No work should be performed at heights without a safety belt and helmet. A harness secured to a scaffold or pulley operated by another person will reduce the chance of slipping if the platform breaks. If work is performed at night, the helmet needs to have a built-in flashlight in addition to other external light sources to improve visibility. However, before wearing a helmet, it should be properly inspected for damage.

Always wear non-slip shoes

People who find themselves working at heights need to wear non-slip shoes. These are usually shoes worn by construction workers with a stiff upper toe, but a soft and thick sole. This improves grip on often slick surfaces such as glass or tile.

Overhead

Although many so-called experts will say that going low will make you dizzy, it will also save your life. If you're not used to working at heights, then you shouldn't be in the first place. Looking down will help you make sure you step carefully and spot signs of cracks or breaks that could cause you to fall.

Get professional training for working at heights

There's no getting around the fact that the best way to work at heights is to get trained. Depending on the type of work you need to do at heights, you can find the right training program designed to teach you the right techniques that will save your life. According to some experts, training can reduce the chance of falling or being injured while working at heights by about 70 percent.
