If you want to give your project an edge, you need to understand the welding process and what you need. Welding is a necessity for large mechanical engineering projects, but it can also be done on smaller projects at home. No matter what kind of welding you use, you need to have the right equipment to help you achieve the end result.
The equipment is just as important as the actual welding process. You can also do this in a number of different ways. One of the most common, especially for DIY projects, is shielded metal arc welding. Before you begin your project, you will need the following equipment.
Welding machine
Leaded electrode holder
Grounding clamps with leads
Electrodes
Metal
Brush
Hammer
Safety equipment: including goggles/welding cap and gloves
Once you have accumulated these materials, you are ready to begin your project. You must first put on your safety gear and be careful not to wear any clothing that is abrasive or exposes your skin. You will need to be very careful during the welding process, especially if you are new to it, as sparks will fly and could burn your skin or ignite your clothing. Then, you need to set up the area where you will be working. It is best to weld in an outside area (such as a workshop), away from any valuable or flammable items. A sturdy and safe surface is also necessary.
Once you are satisfied that you have set everything up correctly, you are ready to begin the welding process. This will require adherence to the following guidelines.
Set up the computer.
Use the correct electrodes. These will be AC or DC, depending on the machine you are using.
Clean the metal with a wire brush. You will need to remove as much of the rust and paint from the metal as possible. If the metal is covered with oil, you may need to use acetone.
Hold it in place. You need to securely clamp the joint being welded before proceeding.
Create a welding arc. This is done by tapping the metal with the electrode and quickly pulling it upward.
Create the molten pool. After creating the necessary arc, you can proceed to create the molten pool that will be used to pass through the metal. This can be done by moving in a straight line or in a circular motion. Remember to maintain speed during this process.
Once you are satisfied, you are ready to finish the weld. Perform this operation by pulling the electrode back from the metal. It needs to cool before you can clean the slag (residue), which you will do with a hammer. Check the weld and allow it to cool.
