For welders, the auto-variable light welding cap is undoubtedly a real blessing. No more fussing about flipping the lens up and down. Having to stop and flip the lens up and down can prove to be a real pain. Of course, if all you have is an old-fashioned welding cap, then it will certainly get the job done. However, if you want to maximize the quality of your soldering work, consider purchasing an automatic dark colored welding cap.
Once you try it, you'll never want to use an outdated helmet again. A common complaint of many welders is that having to flip the lens down when starting to weld causes them to lose their starting position. If you have an old style helmet, I'm sure you'll agree. If you have an old helmet, sunlight is easier to manage in the brightest places.
However, assuming you work in a variety of different environments, an auto-darkening helmet is definitely a better choice. The top of the lens is a solar panel. Once you step into the sun or draw an arc, the solar panel will activate. Now you don't have to worry about stopping in the middle of a weld to flick the lens up or down.
There is an adjustable setting on the side of the lens. Using this setting, you can switch from shade 8 to shade 13 to suit your needs for each specific welding project.
In Australia, we call the old helmets "Ned Kellys," and it's a hassle to change out the lenses every time you change jobs. But with the auto-darkening welding caps, there are adjustable settings on the side of the lens as well as inside the helmet. The helmets I have are fairly basic, but the more elaborate ones have more settings on and in the helmet.
While it may be basic, my helmet allows me to adjust my "sensitivity" level from low to high, and I can also set my "delay time" to slow or fast. Best of all, you can use the auto-lighting helmet for arc, fusion and tig welding!
