Welding and cutting can be a very dangerous occupation or past time. With that being said, I'm going to give you some of my professional advice, and a special heartfelt request! Please! Before beginning any type of welding or cutting operation, you are responsible for your own safety as well as the safety of others in the vicinity of the operation. So, what should you do first in order to maintain safety? First, make sure your welding equipment is properly installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code and any applicable state and local codes. Make sure it is properly grounded and in good working order. A good resource for welders is a copy of the NEC code manual.
Next, you must dress for success. Unlike some popular cable programs, you should always wear protective clothing that is appropriate for welding. Never weld, grind or cut without proper safety glasses approved by ANSI Z49.1, even under the hood while welding. You only have one pair of eyes, so it is especially important to take care of them.
Now, what is the first thing you should do before doing any welding? A: Always search an area of at least 35 feet for flammable, volatile or explosive materials. Make sure the work area is clean and free of hazards. If lengths of welding cable need to be spliced together, make sure all electrical connections are tight and insulated. Do not use cables with worn, cracked insulation or bare spots.
