PPE Health and Safety Regulations

If you are an employer and your employees are engaged in any work activity that may pose any degree of risk to their health or safety, you are required by UK law to provide adequate personal protective equipment. PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment and is provided to your employees to protect them from potential harm where other measures cannot eliminate these possible risks.

Any responsible business will want to limit any threat to employees as a matter of course, but as a legal requirement, non-compliance can have quite serious consequences. You never want to think about a serious accident in the workplace, but healthy realism is vital because if you don't keep your employees safe, you could be responsible for someone's injury, hospital visit or worse.

What is Personal Protective Equipment?

Personal protective equipment can include a wide variety of items, including high-visibility clothing, tough workwear items (such as steel-toed boots) or accessories (such as helmets). Essentially, it is any item that helps to counteract any potentially harmful effects that may be caused by equipment, materials or processes where these items are an integral part of the job role and therefore cannot be completely avoided. For example, let's say you're a construction company and you employ people to work on building sites and construction projects; a job fraught with hazards, from the possibility of large or heavy items falling from heights, to heavy site traffic and the operation of heavy machinery. After conducting a risk assessment, you will need to provide the necessary sturdy work clothing and PPE items that have been determined to be necessary to protect your workers. In this example, you may want to consider providing high-visibility jackets or undershirts, helmets and footwear, gloves, and even waterproof clothing.

Other requirements under the regulations

The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations mean that you must not only provide items, but also be responsible for their suitability. You should ensure that the products supplied are fit for purpose and are properly maintained and stored; regular checks should be made to ensure that the items still provide the protection they were purchased to provide.

It is also your responsibility to ensure that your employees are given clear instructions on how to use PPE properly, and you should ensure that they use the equipment as required. It is also worth noting that you must not charge employees for PPE, as the law requires you to provide them with the correct items to ensure their safety on the job, not a privilege.

Every employer must keep up to date with the health and safety laws affecting their industry, so make sure you provide your employees with the correct safety equipment to avoid any problems.
