Early Hard Hat Development – Turn of the 20th Century
The precursors to contemporary protective helmets emerged in the early 20th century as industrialization brought increasing risks of head trauma in construction, mining, factories, and shipyards [1]. One of the first recorded protective devices was a leather cap lined with cork worn by British railway workers circa 1900 to shield tunnelers from falling debris and tools [2].
Water-resistant tarred canvas caps became common on shipyard building sites to guard riveters and welders against sparks and metal shards raining down from structural work overhead [3].
