Creating a Safe Welding Environment

Welding is fraught with many hazards in all manufacturing activities, and certain precautions are essential for safe welding. Some of the serious risks encountered by welders are nasty fumes and gases, blinding arc rays, flammable sparks and electric shocks.

- Welders must wear prescribed protective clothing before beginning welding work. It is also important to wear eye and ear protection gear while welding/cutting.

- Make sure you are fully equipped with all safe welding protection accessories such as - preferably welding hats with automatic light changing function, welding masks, welding aprons, welding jackets, welding gloves, welding shoes, welding goggles, welding chambers, etc.

- Avoid inhaling toxic fumes and provide adequate ventilation before starting to weld.

- Welders should store butane lighters while welding because welding sparks can cause fires. A butane lighter is very powerful and when it explodes it is as good as 3 sticks of dynamite.

- Great care must be taken with all compressed gas cylinders and make sure they are stored with their caps tightly closed. When compressed gas cylinders become empty, tighten the valves and mark them "empty"

- Follow proper technique and observe all steps in sequence when lighting or closing the flashlight.

-Wear rubber boots and work on a dry, insulated platform

- Especially if you need to arc weld in wet areas.

- If you need to weld in a confined space, you must take appropriate extra precautions because the potential risks are high.

- As a welder, it is your responsibility to protect your co-workers from the harmful rays of the welding arc.
- If you need to splice different lengths of welding cable, you must take extra care. Make sure all electrical connections are tight, strong and well insulated. Stay away from frayed, broken or split cables.

- Check to make sure your arc welding equipment is properly installed and securely grounded and in perfect working condition.

- Make sure flame cutting sparks do not strike hoses, regulators or cylinders, as flame cutting sparks have a tendency to travel even 40 feet.

- Never use oil, grease or any flammable material - if they come in contact with oxygen, they can cause instantaneous combustion. Likewise, never use acetylene at pressures above 15 psi, as higher pressures can mean a terrible explosion.

Please note that almost all gas and arc welding fluxes are inherently toxic and can easily cause allergies in the welder and others around him. All welders must understand the basic lesson that the heat used to weld can cause immeasurable damage to the welder, the people around them and nearby property if allowed to extend beyond the welding area.

Welding shop owners and welding supervisors must set safety standards and lead by example so that welders follow all necessary precautions and welders are educated about the serious consequences that can result from any negligence.
