Have you made up your mind that you really need an auto darkening welding cap? Now you are scratching your head wondering which is the best one for you to buy?

The speed of darkening is very important. A good auto-darkening helmet will change in 1/20,000th of a second or less. Don't buy anything slower.
Some car helmets are not adjustable and are fixed at shade 10. How do you know this works for you. It kind of sucks to find out that your eyes hurt after welding with shade 10 and not being able to darken it. Get one that is adjustable from shade 9-13, you won't regret it.
Sensitivity and delay settings. What are they? Sensitivity is important because sometimes overhead lighting will darken when you don't want it to. Adjusting sensitivity prevents this from happening.
The delay helps keep the lens dark so you don't have to stare at the red hot welds, and also prevents being flashed when something blocks one of the light sensors for a moment.
Some high-end auto-darkening welding caps, such as the Miller Elite, also have an electromagnetic sensor that detects not only light, but also the electromagnetic field created by the arc. This is a very useful feature for tig welding at very low amperage or with a tig welding inverter.

But what about the really cheap auto-darkening helmets I've seen advertised?
If you weld for a living, I wouldn't buy a cheap one for your main helmet. But for an extra helmet, or if you are an amateur weekend warrior welder.
