Arc welding safety is something that no welder should ignore. Many things can go wrong that can have serious consequences, such as serious injury or even death. There are many forms of arc welding - metal arc welding, resistance welding and gas shielded welding. All can lead to injury or death if proper safety procedures are not followed.
There are some general safety tips that you should always follow when you are going to perform any arc welding job. Before you begin work, make sure that all equipment you plan to use is thoroughly inspected. Check for frayed wires or water on the equipment. Be sure to read all instruction manuals and warning labels pertaining to your equipment. You should also always have a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case. Make sure all welders are equipped with power disconnect switches so they can be quickly turned off and shut down before attempting any repairs. Everything should be properly grounded. Never use any electrode holder with defective jaws, loose cable connections, or poor insulation. You should also not draw an arc if someone is nearby without goggles.
You must be sure to pay attention to the personal protective equipment you have. This is a very important part of arc welding safety. Properly fitted welding caps and properly rated filter plates are essential to protect your eyes from the infrared radiation that causes cataracts and retinal burns.
You also need to protect other parts of your body. Wool or treated cotton clothing, a fireproof apron, well-fitting, non-abrasive clothing, straight-legged pants that cover your shoes, a fireproof cape or shoulder holster for overhead work, gloves and a long-sleeved shirt are all essential. This will protect you from arc flash and welding spatter. Make sure your clothes are free of oil and grease.
Another important part of arc welding safety is proper ventilation. Welding should be done in an area that is at least 10,000 cubic feet with a ceiling height of 16 feet and is suitable for every welder. The system should be placed where you can get natural airflow or a fan to blow the fumes away from your face, or at least through it, but never directly into it. Cross ventilation should not be blocked by equipment or anything else, and if possible, welding should not be done in confined areas.
Arc welding safety is also related to preventing electric shock. An electric shock can be fatal. To avoid electric shock, make sure the welding cable is away from the power cable, dry and free of oil and grease. Electrode holders and cables should be well insulated. Wear dry clothing without holes and dry gloves. Welders need to be insulated from the ground by dry insulating materials (such as dry wood or rubber mats); the welding unit frame should also be grounded. Remember also that electrodes should never be changed with wet gloves or bare hands.
