3 Things That Will Make You Better At TIG Welding

When TIG welding goes wrong, you don't do a hundred things wrong. It's usually only 2 or 3 things. Sometimes changing just one thing can change everything. But if you don't know where to look, then you'll just keep screwing up. They say the definition of insanity is doing the same damn thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Another way to put it is.

"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got!"

I've trained quite a few welders, and I've noticed that the ones who learn best and fastest are the ones who think about what they're doing. Instead of getting angry and throwing their welding caps across the store, they look at their welds and ask themselves what they did wrong. They think. They make some changes. They asked for help.

The 3 things I see TIG welding rookies get wrong more often than anything else are

The arc is too long.
Torch angle too big.
Not shielding the hot tip of the wire
Let's break it down a bit more. An arc that is too long will not precisely locate the heat. The longer the arc, the more TIG welding becomes like gas welding. Gas welding goes out with high button shoes, TIG welding is better. (If you keep the arc close enough). If the tip of your rod is balled up and sticking into the puddle instead of feeding well into the weld puddle, then your arc is probably too long.

Too much torch angle can also cause your rod to roll into a ball and spot into the puddle. In most cases, if this happens, your arc length and torch angle are too large. You may need to position what you are welding or the body in order to reduce the torch angle and still be able to see the tip of the tungsten electrode. You need to see it. (If you can't see the tip of the electrode, how will you maintain a tight arc length?

Not shielding the hot tip of the wire will make you boo! It will take all the fun out of TIG welding. TIG welding is fun because it is clean and when things are going well, the puddles flow like honey. Take it away and the fun begins.

When you take the hot end of the rod out of the argon shield, it oxidizes and puts the cornflakes into the puddle. Sometimes a bigger cup helps.

The main thing to remember when you are trying to learn how to tig weld is to think about what you are doing instead of doing the same thing wrong over and over again.

Good luck with your tig welding.
